Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a 1986 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the fourth feature film based on the Star Trek science fiction television series and completes the story arc begun in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and continued in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Intent on returning home to Earth to face trial for their crimes, the former crew of the USS Enterprise finds the planet in grave danger from an alien probe attempting to contact now-extinct humpback whales. The crew travel to Earth's past to find whales who can answer the probe's call.

L'ammiraglio Kirk e il suo equipaggio decidono di tornare sulla Terra con lo Sparviero (ribattezzato dal dottor McCoy HMS Bounty) catturato ai Klingon nel precedente episodio Star Trek III: Alla ricerca di Spock), tutti rassegnati a subire la corte marziale per avere sottratto e distrutto la nave stellare USS Enterprise. Avvicinandosi al pianeta ricevono però un messaggio che avvisa che la Terra è sotto attacco da parte di una misteriosa e invulnerabile sonda spaziale aliena che emana un segnale capace di neutralizzare qualunque fonte energetica.
Kirk e i suoi intraprendono allora un pericoloso viaggio nel tempo per andare a ritroso fino al XX secolo, con la missione di recuperare due balene e trasportarle nel XXIII secolo, salvando in questo modo il pianeta dalla distruzione.
